Smooth Trunkfish

Lactophrys triqueter

Sighting evidence at CEADS Naval Reserve, Paraty

An indicator of healthy, complex reef structure, smooth trunkfish hover just above the substrate at CEADS, puffing water into the sand to expose buried invertebrates. Their rigid, box-like bodies and comically slow movement make them endearing subjects for underwater photographers. The CEADS population is notably large for the region, consistent with the exceptional reef health documented in Brazilian Navy-commissioned surveys.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
