Ras Kigomasha
Pemba Island · Tanzania
The northernmost tip of Pemba Island where two current systems collide and the reef wraps around the headland in a continuous coral garden visited by green and hawksbill turtles throughout the year. The reef crest at 5 m is a zoo of activity — parrotfish crunch coral, sergeant majors guard purple egg patches, and triggerfish rush at any diver who strays too close to their nests. Deeper, at 20 to 25 m, the profile flattens into sandy clearings where resting whitetip sharks line up like aeroplanes on a taxiway. This is a site that rewards slow and patient divers who watch and wait rather than swim and rush!
