Batu Nisan
Perhentian Islands · Malaysia
Batu Nisan — Tombstone Rock — takes its name from a distinctive upright rock formation that breaks the surface off the southeastern coast of Perhentian Besar. Below the waterline, a sloping reef descends from 3 metres to a sandy floor at 18 metres, dotted with coral bommies that serve as cleaning stations and shelter an exceptional variety of macro life. This is the Perhentians' best dedicated macro and night dive site: blue-ringed octopus have been recorded here, alongside ornate ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp, and mantis shrimp emerging from sandy burrows after dark. During the day the site is also productive for reef photography given its shallow depth and typically calm conditions.
