Cathedral Cave
Pescador Island · Philippines
Cathedral Cave is a large cavern on the north face of Pescador Island where a collapsed ceiling has created a shaft that funnels sunlight down into the chamber in a single dramatic beam — the phenomenon that gives the site its name. At the right time of day the light column illuminates clouds of glassfish suspended in the cave mouth while silvertip bats roost in the dry upper sections. Moray eels of several species occupy the crevices at the entrance, and lionfish hang motionless in the shadows. The cavern extends to around 18 metres and opens back to the wall outside. Divers with no cavern certification should stay within the light zone; the restrictions are clearly defined and the site rewards the discipline.
