The largest bony fish inhabiting coral reefs, giant grouper can exceed 2.7 metres and 400 kg. Apex ambush predators, they swallow prey whole including small sharks and rays. Largely absent from fished reefs, their presence at PIPA is a direct indicator of effective marine protection.
