Faial Marina Wreck — Horta Harbour

The deliberately sunk vessel off Horta's marina provides the Faial-Pico area's most accessible structural dive — 30 metres down, on a sand and volcanic rubble bottom, with enough residual current to push marine growth across every surface. The wreck is encrusted in hydroids, orange cup corals and pink sea fans, and the hull shelters large congregations of two-banded sea bream, comber fish, moray eels and the occasional octopus. Visibility is often better than the channel average because the site sits slightly outside the main tidal race. Night dives on the wreck are productive — octopus emerge from every hatch, and bioluminescence in the water column can be spectacular from July onward. Accessible from both Faial by a short boat ride and from Pico via the ferry crossing to Horta.
