The rubble-strewn corridors of Baiae's drowned buildings create ideal denning habitat for common octopus, which wedge themselves into gaps between marble blocks and watch passing divers with curiosity rather than alarm. Piles of crab and bivalve shells outside den entrances reveal long-occupied territories that persist across generations of animals. Early morning dives in autumn catch individuals actively hunting across open mosaic pavements before retreating at first light.

Common Octopus is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
