The crevice-riddled volcanic basalt of Miseno Bay provides perfect moray habitat, and it is unusual to complete a dive here without at least three or four sightings of the Mediterranean moray peering from its den entrance. Morays here cooperate in coordinated hunts with roving groups of grouper — a behaviour documented in the Mediterranean but rarely witnessed by casual divers. Their population density is a reliable proxy for reef health and the absence of destructive fishing pressure.

Moray Eel is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
