Overview
The signature reef dive of Providencia, named for local diver and explorer Felipe Cabeza. White sand channels lead out to a stepped series of coral terraces and ledges dropping from about 9 to 24 metres, draped in sea fans, sponges, and black coral. Nurse sharks rest beneath the overhangs, great barracuda hang in the blue, and hawksbill turtles graze the slope. The site sits on the Old Providence barrier reef — one of the largest in the Caribbean and part of the UNESCO Seaflower Biosphere Reserve. A small submerged Christ statue marks the spot.
Briefing note
Inside the UNESCO Seaflower Biosphere Reserve and the Old Providence McBean Lagoon marine park — no gloves and no contact with coral; marine-park rules are enforced. Few operators work the island and the nearest recompression chamber is off-island, so dive conservatively. Visibility peaks in the Dec-Apr dry season; Sep-Nov is hurricane season.
