Malabar grouper occupy almost every suitable cavern and overhang on the Ibo Island reef, their spotted flanks visible in the shadows of coral formations throughout the depth range from 8 to 30 metres. These large ambush predators are territorial and sedentary enough that individual fish can be reliably found in the same location on successive dives, making them one of the site's most photographable residents. The abundance of large grouper at Ibo is a key ecological indicator of reef health — in areas subject to fishing pressure, grouper are typically the first species removed, making their presence here a powerful signal of the reef's intact predator community.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
