Ibo Pinnacles
Quirimbas Archipelago · Mozambique
The Ibo Pinnacles are a series of submerged coral towers rising from a sandy plain at 30 metres to within 8 metres of the surface, each encrusted in a dazzling layer of soft corals, crinoids, and feather stars that transforms them into living pillars of colour. The pinnacles channel the Mozambique Channel's currents into accelerated flows between the towers, creating ideal conditions for the aggregation of schooling fish and the pelagic predators that hunt them. This is one of the most visually dramatic sites in the entire archipelago and rewards multiple dives as different current states reveal entirely different communities.
