Matemo Island Wall
Quirimbas Archipelago · Mozambique
The Matemo Island Wall is the Quirimbas Archipelago's signature big-animal dive — a near-vertical coral wall that plunges from 8 metres to beyond recreational limits, swept by the currents of the Mozambique Channel and used as a highway by manta rays, eagle rays, and occasional hammerhead sharks. The wall's upper sections are richly colonised by table corals and sea fans, while the deeper sections feature dramatic overhangs draped in whip corals and cup corals. Current-driven drift diving along the wall allows coverage of hundreds of metres of pristine reef in a single dive.
