Glassfish

Ambassis gymnocephalus

Sighting evidence at Sanko Maru, Rabaul

Vast clouds of glassfish fill the interior holds and companionways of the Sanko Maru, creating shimmering silver curtains that part and reform around divers. These small schooling fish rely on transparency and collective movement to evade predators, and their density inside the wreck is among the highest of any site in the Rabaul area. They form a critical link in the food web, supporting the lionfish, trevally, and batfish that define the wreck's character.
