Grey reef sharks are one of the defining species of Indo-Pacific reef passages, using the current flow through channels to increase their hunting efficiency. They are highly territorial and communicate threat postures when approached too closely, arching their back and lowering their pectoral fins. Avana Passage reliably holds a residential group that patrols the same section of channel on every tide cycle.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
