Shark Bay
Redang Island · Malaysia
A sheltered bay on Redang's western flank where a resident population of blacktip reef sharks has habituated to divers over decades of consistent no-take protection. Juvenile blacktips patrol the sandy shallows at three to eight metres in groups of four to twelve, circling in predictable patterns that allow photographers extended observation windows. The bay's coral-lined walls shelter lionfish, scorpionfish, and ornate ghost pipefish in the crevices, while a cleaning station at 12 metres hosts a steady procession of surgeonfish and wrasse waiting their turn. The site is among Redang's best for night diving, when octopus, cuttlefish, and sleeping parrotfish emerge across the sandy floor.
