La Grande Anse Pinnacles
Réunion Island · France
Volcanic spires rise from a sandy floor at 28 metres, their sides encrusted with cup corals and crinoids, the surrounding water frequently patrolled by hammerhead sharks during austral winter. The pinnacles create natural current breaks that concentrate reef fish — large schools of snapper and fusilier wheel around the formations while grouper hold in the gaps. Between November and March, humpback whales are sometimes audible during the dive, passing through on migration.
