Les Avirons Wall
Réunion Island · France
A sheer volcanic wall on Reunion's southwest coast, Les Avirons drops from 6 metres at the reef top to beyond 50 metres, its basalt face colonised by black coral trees, large sea fans, and aggregations of soldierfish sheltering in the overhangs. Bull sharks are a regular presence along the wall base, and Napoleon wrasse cruise the shallower sections with characteristic calm. The wall's volcanic origin means the rock face itself is visually striking — dark, textured lava interrupted by crevices packed with invertebrate life.
