Prasonisi Sponge Gardens
Rhodes · Greece
At Rhodes' southernmost tip where the Aegean and the Mediterranean meet, a sweeping rocky plateau from 10 to 36 m hosts one of the densest barrel sponge and loggerhead sponge communities in Greek waters. Mild tidal-exchange currents funnel nutrients across the plateau, feeding forests of finger sponges and sea fans that erupt from every horizontal surface. Loggerhead sea turtles are year-round residents drawn by the rich invertebrate prey, and pelagic species including amberjack and barracuda cruise the deeper drop-off edge.
