Bajo Minalta
Rosario Islands · Colombia
Bajo Minalta is a submerged pinnacle rising from 35 m to within 12 m of the surface on the outer edge of the Rosario shelf, swept by currents that bring open-ocean clarity and attract schooling fish in numbers rarely seen at the inner island sites. Silky sharks and occasionally oceanic whitetips circle the pinnacle's summit during the dry-season upwelling, while great barracuda and horse-eye jacks form dense tornadoes above the peak. Sea fans and tube sponges the size of phone booths cover the deeper flanks, their orientation revealing the prevailing current that makes this site simultaneously challenging and thrillingly productive.
