Great barracuda are apex ambush predators that hang motionless at reef edges, often in small groups, waiting for prey fish to enter striking range. Their silvery flanks and torpedo shape make them instantly recognisable; large adults can reach 1.8 metres. On La Buse they frequently school in loose formations of 20 to 50 individuals, particularly in the morning hours before dispersing to hunt individually.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
