Green turtles graze the seagrass beds fringing the island and rest on shallow reef ledges throughout the year. Adults return to the beaches of northeast Madagascar to nest, sometimes travelling hundreds of kilometres. As one of the few vertebrates that can digest seagrass efficiently, they play a critical role in maintaining the productivity of coastal meadows.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
