Calheta Funda Reef

Sal and Brava · Cape Verde

A natural reef system running along a protected bay on Sal's southern coast, Calheta Funda benefits from the calm conditions created by the bay geometry and the warm, clear water that pools here in all but the windiest months. The reef top at 6 metres transitions through coral bommies and volcanic rock formations down to a sandy slope at 25 metres where eagle rays rest between feeding excursions over the sand. Loggerhead turtles are a near-certain sighting — multiple individuals use the reef as a resting and feeding area year-round. The bay's shallow section is home to juvenile yellowtail snapper and sergeant major damselfish, while the deeper slope hosts African pompano and occasional nurse sharks resting under ledge overhangs. An ideal site for a second or third dive of the day.
