Palolo Deep Marine Reserve
Dive site
Palolo Deep is Samoa's premier dive site and one of the best-protected reef systems in the central Pacific. The reserve sits just offshore from Apia Harbour, accessible as a shore entry from the coast road. A broad shallow reef flat at 2 to 5 metres is carpeted in hard corals and seagrass, where green sea turtles graze in the open throughout the day. The reef edge drops abruptly into a vertical wall that plunges beyond 40 metres, covered in sea fans, whip corals, and massive barrel sponges. Blacktip reef sharks are resident on the wall and in the channel, often visible from the reef flat. The reserve's enforced no-take status has produced fish densities that stand in sharp contrast to the heavily fished reefs around Apia, making this an important baseline site for regional coral reef monitoring programmes.
