Shortfin Mako

Isurus oxyrinchus

Sighting evidence at Dollabarat, São Miguel

Shortfin makos appear irregularly alongside blue sharks during summer chum sessions, typically arriving at speed from depth and circling with considerably more aggression than their blue cousins. They are among the fastest fish in the ocean and their torpedo build and counter-shading make them visually striking at close range. Sightings are never guaranteed but when a mako does arrive it typically dominates the encounter for several minutes before disappearing back into the blue.
