Conger eels at Formigas rival the morays in size and can exceed 2 m in length, tucking their thick bodies into overhangs where the surge brings a constant food supply. The Azores population appears to reach greater average sizes than mainland Atlantic congers, possibly due to the undisturbed food web here. They emerge most actively at dusk and at night when the reef becomes a hunting ground rather than a resting place.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
