Vila Franca do Campo Islet
São Miguel · Portugal
A volcanic crater islet just 500 m off São Miguel's south coast forms a sheltered natural amphitheatre above water and a richly colonised basalt reef below, making it the most accessible and beginner-friendly dive in the archipelago. Loggerhead turtles rest on the rocky shelves at 5 to 15 m while Atlantic parrotfish graze the encrusting algae and resident barracuda hover in loose formations along the deeper wall. The site doubles as one of the Azores' best snorkelling spots, but divers who push to 25 m find cleaner water, more impressive coral encrustation, and the occasional visiting catsharks tucked under ledges.
