Mid-Atlantic Blue Water Column
Dive site
South of São Miguel the ocean floor drops beyond 2000 m and the upper water column becomes a hunting ground without boundaries. Operators run dedicated blue-water diving sessions in the open Atlantic specifically for encounters with free-swimming pelagic species far from any seamount or reef. Loggerhead sea turtles drift in surface currents alongside oceanic triggerfish; schools of Atlantic bonito and skipjack tuna career through the column chasing flying fish; and blue sharks cruise at 5 to 15 m depth in a behaviour called surface-hunting that brings them into comfortable camera range. Manta rays pass through sporadically from June to August. The absence of any structural reference point makes this a purely mid-ocean experience.
