El Bajo Seamount
Sea of Cortez · Mexico
3 submerged seamounts rise from 200 m to within 22 m of the surface roughly 12 km northeast of La Paz. El Bajo is ground zero for hammerhead shark aggregations in the Sea of Cortez: schools of up to 200 individuals form on the seamounts each summer, circling in the blue water column while mobula rays fly through in formation below them. The seamounts also concentrate whale sharks during August and September. Open-water current can be significant; divers must be comfortable with blue-water descents and strong lateral drift.
