Los Islotes Sea Lions
Sea of Cortez · Mexico
A pair of rocky islets at the northern tip of Espiritu Santo Island hosts the southernmost California sea lion colony in the Sea of Cortez — approximately 400 individuals including juveniles that treat visiting divers as toys. Pups dive-bomb from the surface, grab fins, and blow bubble rings in your face. Visibility is clear and the underwater topography of boulders and arches gives the colony structure to play on. The site is a 45-minute boat ride from La Paz and is dived year-round though juvenile activity peaks between June and October.
