Sohoton Jellyfish Lake
Siargao · Philippines
Hidden inside the limestone karst of Bucas Grande island, Sohoton Cove's marine lake is one of the world's few places where divers and snorkellers can swim freely among thousands of stingless jellyfish (Mastigias papua etpisoni). The lake connects to the sea through underwater tunnels that regulate salinity and temperature, creating a brackish environment where the jellies have lost their sting through evolutionary isolation. Morning light pierces the jungle canopy and illuminates shafts of pulsing jellyfish. Snorkelling is more common than scuba here to minimise bubble disturbance, and the caves above the waterline hold ancient boat coffins.
