Qalansiyah Wall
Socotra Island · Yemen
The fishing village of Qalansiyah on Socotra's western tip guards a submerged wall that drops from a mangrove-fringed shallows to a sand slope at 30 metres. The wall face is blanketed in soft corals — yellow, purple, and orange leather corals create an almost garden-like scene unusual for the Indian Ocean. Juvenile fish density in the shallows is exceptionally high, making this the best site on the island for underwater photography of small subjects. Whale sharks have been documented seasonally passing offshore.
