Ras Shuab
Socotra Island · Yemen
A bold headland on Socotra's north coast where strong upwellings from the deep Arabian Sea push nutrients up the wall and attract open-water pelagics. Bull sharks are seen regularly at depth, cruising the blue water beyond the wall edge. Grey reef sharks and hammerheads pass seasonally. The topography runs from a shallow plateau at 8 metres down a steep wall that vanishes below safe diving limits. Huge gorgonian fans at 25 to 35 metres are among the largest in the Indian Ocean.
