Limasawa Island Wall
Southern Leyte / Sogod Bay · Philippines
Limasawa Island sits at the southern tip of Leyte, historically significant as the site of the first Catholic mass in the Philippines in 1521. Below the waterline, its outer walls are equally striking: sheer limestone drops to over 50 metres with an almost uninterrupted curtain of sea fans, wire coral, and black coral forests. The channel between Limasawa and the Surigao Strait funnels strong nutrient upwellings that support pelagic life including whale sharks, silky sharks, and occasional hammerheads. The site is exposed and best dived in settled conditions during the northeast monsoon.
