Olive sea snakes are air-breathing reptiles that have colonised the Yongala wreck in large numbers, using the structure as a hunting ground for small fish and eels. They are curious animals that will approach divers closely and have been known to investigate camera equipment, their forked tongues flickering as they assess new objects in their environment. Despite being highly venomous, they are docile in the absence of provocation and bites are extraordinarily rare.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
