Large conger eels up to 1.5 m occupy the deepest rock overhangs and cave entrances at Wuddy Rocks, their broad silver-grey bodies resting motionless during daylight hours with just the head visible. They are apex nocturnal predators that leave their dens after dark to hunt fish, octopus, and crustaceans across the reef. The reserve's protection has allowed Wuddy Rocks conger to reach sizes rarely seen in comparable fished UK waters.

Conger Eel is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
