Jogashima
Tateyama / Sagami Bay · Japan
Jogashima Island at the mouth of Sagami Bay marks the transition between the sheltered inner bay and the open Pacific, producing a unique mix of temperate reef species and seasonal pelagic visitors. The rocky reef from 8 to 30 metres is heavily colonised by encrusting red and pink coralline algae, with dense populations of nudibranchs, especially Tritonia, Dendronotus, and large dorids in winter. The stronger currents here compared to inner bay sites bring schools of horse mackerel and yellowtail amberjack, and the occasional blue shark passes by in late summer. Wobbegong sharks are a consistent highlight, wedged into rock shelves at 12 to 18 metres year-round.
