Longlure frogfish are masters of disguise at La Piscinita, adopting the colours and textures of the sponges they perch upon — yellow, orange, red, and cream individuals have all been documented at this site. They are ambush predators that use a modified dorsal spine (the illicium) tipped with a fleshy lure to attract small fish and crustaceans within striking distance, then engulf prey in under six milliseconds. Individuals are highly site-faithful, sometimes remaining on the same sponge for weeks.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
