Tarpon

Megalops atlanticus

Sighting evidence at Punta Izopo Wall, Tela

One of the ocean's most spectacular game fish — silver, prehistoric-looking, and capable of explosive leaps when hooked, though divers simply watch them from below. Atlantic tarpon gather in the shallow channels and river mouths around Punta Izopo during the wet-season months, using the freshwater-saltwater mixing zone as a spawning staging area. Underwater, a school of tarpon hovering in mid-water — reflecting the ambient light like a cloud of mirrors — is one of the Caribbean's great spectacles. Least concern globally, but heavily targeted by sport fishing; the protected bay and national park boundary provide meaningful buffer here.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
