Underwater at El Puertito

El Puertito

Tenerife · Spain

El Puertito is a small natural harbour in Tenerife's Adeje municipality that has become internationally renowned as one of the most reliable places in the world to encounter critically endangered angel sharks resting on sand during daylight hours, their flattened bodies perfectly matching the pale substrate as round stingrays glide overhead and butterfly rays cruise the sandy shallows. The site's gentle gradient from shore to 18 metres and exceptional calm make it accessible to all certification levels, and the combination of sandy habitat, scattered volcanic rocks, and Posidonia seagrass beds supports an ecological diversity far greater than the modest scenery suggests. Resident green sea turtles complete the headline act, often encountered grazing seagrass within metres of resting angel sharks in a scene unique in European diving.
