Los Gigantes Wall
Tenerife · Spain
The towering Los Gigantes cliffs on Tenerife's northwest coast descend vertically into the Atlantic, creating an underwater continuation of the 600-metre rock face that plunges past recreational diving limits and hosts some of the most impressive cold-water gorgonian gardens in the Canary Islands, with dense stands of red sea fans at 25 to 40 metres attended by moray eels, conger eels, and large schools of Atlantic horse mackerel sweeping past in tightly coordinated formation. Black coral trees and orange cup corals encrust the deeper overhangs while endemic Canarian wrasse and blennies colonise the shallower terraces, and the nutrient-rich upwelling along this exposed northwest coast produces visibility that frequently exceeds 30 metres. The drama of diving at the base of the largest sea cliffs in Europe makes this one of Tenerife's most cinematically spectacular dives.
