Caverna das Focas
Terceira · Portugal
Named for the Atlantic grey seals that historically used this stretch of the Terceira coast, Caverna das Focas is a volcanic cave and arch system that penetrates the cliffline to a depth of 22 metres. The cavern interior is decorated with encrusting sponges in vivid orange and purple, and the archway frames a fish-soup exterior of bream, wrasse, and comber. Conger eels occupy the deeper cave sections, and the resident population of cleaner wrasse services a steady queue of passing visitors. Light play through the cave mouth makes this a rewarding photography site.
