Batu Angus
Ternate · Indonesia
Batu Angus — meaning 'burned rock' — is a lava field created by Gamalama's 1673 eruption that extends beneath the surface as a dramatic geological landscape. Volcanic boulders encrusted with tunicates and hydroids shelter pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish, and frogfish. The black lava substrate makes colours pop for macro photography and the site is rarely dived.
