Underwater at Mainit Point

Mainit Point

Dive site

Mainit Point on the northern tip of Tingloy Island is named for the warm hydrothermal seeps that keep bottom temperatures a few degrees above ambient, creating a microhabitat that attracts unusual species assemblages. The black sand slope from 5 to 28 meters hosts fire urchins sheltering zebra crabs, multiple Coleman's shrimp pairs, and rare Periclimenes harlequin shrimp. The hydrothermal venting also supports dense growths of encrusting sponge that provide housing for several nudibranch species not found elsewhere in Batangas. Night dives are particularly productive.
