A Caribbean endemic recognisable by its dramatic yellow-striped face and white-edged fins, the splendid toadfish spends its life tucked into coral rubble and sponge crevices. It produces a loud boat-horn grunt used for mating and territorial signalling that divers sometimes hear before they spot the fish. It feeds nocturnally on small fish and invertebrates, making a night dive here particularly rewarding.

Splendid toadfish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
