Overview
A drift dive off the southern tip of Goat Island, where the Guyana Current pushes divers along a slope crowded with orange elephant ear sponges, yellow tube sponges and grey barrel sponges before funneling them through the Kamikaze Cut, a narrow gap that speeds up the flow. The same nutrient laden water that grows those sponges feeds hawksbill turtles, nurse sharks tucked under ledges, and schools of barracuda and tarpon, with manta rays passing through in the greener plankton months. The dive runs from a sponge covered shelf near the island down past 30 m.
Briefing note
Strong drift is both the draw and the hazard: the current accelerates through a gap the guides call the Kamikaze Cut, so expect a fast ride and carry an SMB for the live boat pickup. It dives best on a slack to building tide with a guide who knows the timing. Plankton heavy water from the Guyana Current keeps visibility variable and feeds the sponges. The site lies within northeast Tobago waters managed for reef protection, so spearfishing and glove use are discouraged.
