Aharen Coral Garden
Tokashiki Island · Japan
The reef directly offshore from Aharen Beach on Tokashiki's west coast descends in a series of shallow coral terraces from 3 to 22 metres, carpeted with some of the densest table Acropora and brain coral growth in the Kerama Islands. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres in the legendary Kerama Blue water, revealing every detail of the reef architecture from the surface. Green sea turtles graze the seagrass patches between terraces and rest beneath large coral overhangs throughout the day, habituated to diver presence through decades of protection inside the Kerama National Park. The site is sheltered from prevailing north-east winds by the island's topography, making it diveable for most of the year and ideal as an entry-level site that does not sacrifice wildlife encounters for accessibility.
