Underwater at Hizushi Reef

Hizushi Reef

Tokashiki Island · Japan

Hizushi Reef at the northern tip of Tokashiki Island is a submerged pinnacle system rising from 30 metres to within 8 metres of the surface, its summit covered with healthy branching and massive Porites corals that have escaped significant bleaching due to consistent upwelling of cooler water from the adjacent channel. The pinnacles concentrate an extraordinary density of reef fish — large schools of glassfish swarm over the structure in shimmering curtains, attracting trevally that launch slashing attacks from below and above simultaneously. White-tip reef sharks rest in the sand channels between pinnacles during the day, and the deeper rubble slopes around the base hold sleeping nurse sharks and various ray species. This is considered one of the signature dives of the Kerama group for experienced divers comfortable with moderate current.
