The most iconic large predator of the Tremiti reserve, brown grouper (dusky grouper) are protected here and have grown to impressive sizes — individuals exceeding 50 kg have been documented in the archipelago. They are solitary and strongly territorial, favouring the deeper outer wall sections of the cave and the large boulders below, where they hunt fish and cephalopods. Their presence in high numbers is a direct indicator of the reserve's effectiveness.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
