Gasparee Island Caves
Trinidad · Trinidad and Tobago
Gasparee Island in the Gulf of Paria contains an extraordinary network of underwater limestone caves and caverns, with stalactite-lined chambers descending to 20 meters and opening into cenote-like pools illuminated by shafts of blue light from surface openings. The caves shelter dense colonies of glass shrimp and cave-dwelling fish including cardinalfish and bigeyes, while the walls are draped in encrusting sponges in brilliant orange and red. The site is unique in the southern Caribbean — its mix of geological spectacle and macro life rivals the famous cenotes of Mexico at a fraction of the visitor numbers.
