Point Baleine Kelp and Sponge Garden
Dive site
Named for historical whale sightings in the channel, Point Baleine is the most dramatic expression of Trinidad's cold upwelling. Strap kelp grows in curtains from the rocks — extraordinary for a Caribbean location — and enormous barrel sponges the size of small cars anchor the deeper sections. The temperature swing of 5 degrees from surface to bottom drives a thermocline that refracts light into prismatic columns. Macro photographers find nudibranchs, arrow crabs, and cleaning shrimp stations around every sponge base. Atlantic spadefish school in the mid-water, and the occasional hammerhead passes through in winter. This site has been cited in two academic papers as evidence of persistent Orinoco-driven upwelling effects on Caribbean biodiversity.
